The Catalyst

The Evangelism and Early Discipleship Training Course

The "Catalyst" is our personal evangelism and early discipleship training course. This course is for your existing church members, and it can have a great reviving effect on a congregation.

Research has proven again and again that the majority of people who come to faith in Christ through the ministry of a local church initially come to the church (or a special evangelistic event) because of an invitation from an existing church member.

In his book Crusade Evangelism and the Local Church Dr Sterling Huston (long-time Director of North American Crusades for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association) said of the BGEA crusades:

“Evangelism is built on relationships. It is possible to gather a crowd at a crusade by making the meetings entertaining and appealing. But for an evangelistic harvest to occur, Christians must sow and water in the lives of people around them. The living example and the loving invitation of a Christian, offered to someone who needs Jesus Christ, is the single most important factor in influencing Crusade attendance.”

Dr Huston goes on to quote the following statistic: 75.6% of people responding to the Gospel in their crusades came because they were personally invited by a Christian friend (and 73.8% were picked up and transported to the Crusade by their friend!).

There is an untapped wealth of evangelistic opportunity in the relationships your church members already have, and often a simple invitation to attend a low-key, home-based video course (or an evangelistic breakfast, etc) is all it takes for them to begin their journey towards faith in Christ.

But for this untapped wealth to be harvested there will need to be a fresh inspiration for personal evangelism together with a practical, workable strategy taught to the people of your church. This is what the Catalyst course does.

The Catalyst course is a seven-session seminar which will not only re-inspire the members of your church for personal evangelism, but will teach them a proven, comfortable technique for doing so.

How it works

Should you (as an eldership team) want to embark on a journey with us our first step will be to schedule a major evangelistic outreach in the future (normally in about six months). This can be a single gospel-oriented Sunday, or even better, an intense series of daily evangelistic meetings of up to several weeks.

We'll then use the next six months to prepare the church. This will include getting as many members as possible to volunteer to play their part. All volunteers will first join a five week small group to complete the "Five Foundations" course, immediately followed by the Catalyst course (normally run over a weekend).

This preparation period will not only teach your church how to use all of Barleyfield's resources in a single, holistic strategy for evangelism & early discipleship, but it will catalyse a whole host of personal evangelism (in preparation for the upcoming evangelistic events) while producing a crowd of new volunteers to serve in one of a number of new ministry positions which our strategy will unlock.
